Find out more about plans to bring true green steel manufacturing to Collie, WA

Green Steel of WA is holding a series of community information sessions on Tuesday, 5 December 2023, to ensure stakeholders, community and workers in transition are well-informed about the proposed Collie-based steel mill that will convert scrap steel into rebar for local and international consumption.

The project is in the advanced stages of development and proceeding towards a final investment decision in 2024. The project has secured a technology partnership with global steelmaking leader Danieli, which has been providing innovative steelmaking solutions around the world for more than 100 years.

Current works include applications to local government, electricity network and environment studies, as well as working with potential mill contractors to allow the project to switch rapidly into construction.

“We’re truly excited about creating a sustainable steel industry for Western Australia, which begins in Collie by building the skills and capabilities and the foundations for a circular economy for steel in WA,” Managing Director Azlan Ho said.

“Our project is fully aligned with Collie’s Just Transition plan, and we are working closely with government, industry and unions to create high-quality blue-collar jobs for Collie’s mine and power station workers.”

The project will require $400 million in total investment and is expected to create 200 local jobs, up to 2000 indirect jobs and 600 jobs in construction.

The current phase of the work to take it through to final investment decision has been part-funded by the WA Government through the Collie Futures Fund, administered by the Department of Premier of Cabinet and the South West Development Commission.

Construction of the plant is expected to commence in late 2024, with first steel in 2026.
